Creating File Folders

In computer land, all data (text, photos, music, etc.) is stored in containers called file folders. The computer usually decides where it is going to store this data, therein lies the problem. You may save a photo from a website, and if you do not pay attention as to where the computer puts it, you may have a problem finding it again. The trick is to create a place where you can save your "stuff" and easily find it again. The goal of this page is to enable you to create a place of your own.  You can create a file folder almost anywhere you desire, but since we are going to make it easy to find, we will place it on the desktop (the screen that appears when your computer starts up, you know the one with all of the icons on it).

1. Go to your desktop

2. Using the RIGHT mouse button, click anywhere on the desktop where there are no icons (a "clear" space on the desktop). A menu will appear.

3. On the menu, left click on NEW, then click on FOLDER.

4. A new folder will appear on your desktop. It will be titled "new folder". Backspace over the words "new folder"  and type in a title that will mean something to you. If you're not feeling creative, type in My Stuff.

5. If you want to change the name later, right click on the folder and select rename.

6. If someday you decide that you don't need the folder anymore, simply click on the folder and hit delete.

7. You now have a file folder of your very own. On the next page (Page 5), we will get some "stuff" to put in your folder.
